ABOUT

Stephanie Tihanyi is a British painter, portraitist and print-maker, who has spent almost three decades living on the small Caribbean island of St. Martin in the Dutch/French West Indies. Stephanie’s dreamlike mythic/allegorical paintings, utilize portraiture, sea & landscape, botanical studies and wildlife in order to portray surreal stories, oscillating between fear and fascination, tenderness and cruelty, fables of allies and protagonists, that represent both the inner archetypes of the psyche and its influence in the dramas played out in the collective realities of our contemporary world.

Her influences are drawn from Italian and Flemish Renaissance art, and Surrealism and the Fantastic Realists. Self-taught Stephanie studied relief/block printing in 2012 and classical Flemish/Italian painting techniques in Austria and Italy in 2014 and in Austria again, in 2016.

Stephanie’s works have been exhibited in many countries, the islands of the Caribbean, St. Martin, Nevis, Antigua, Anguilla, Santa Domingo and also in New York, London, Austria and Italy. Her works are held in private collections in the Caribbean, Brazil, USA, Canada, UK, France, Netherlands and Switzerland. She has painted many stage sets for theatrical productions on the island of St. Maarten, as well as mural and illustration work.

In February 2022, Stephanie returned to the UK and currently works at her studio in a rural cottage farmhouse in Lincolnshire, where she continues to paint, working on a new series of paintings she calls ‘Hot Earth’, in response to living with global warming.
